| “IT’S TIME CHILD!” were the
sentiments expressed by Grammy Award winning Ann Nesby along
with Timothy W. Lee (Nesby’s manager/husband) in 2001
after an unmerited hiatus due to the powers that be within the
music industry. After the critical acclaim of Nesby’s
1996 solo effort, I’M HERE FOR YOU (A&M/Perspective
Records), Ann Nesby found herself in musical limbo while her
label at the time (A&M/Perspective Records) merged with
INTERSCOPE RECORDS. Throughout the transition to her new label
home, many of Nesby’s label mates were victims to the
politics of the “machine.” Chaos at every turn,
Nesby worked on completing her follow up album then titled,
LOVE IS WHAT WE NEED, it would be nearly four years since Nesby’s
debut album before any new music would be heard from the thunder
voiced Nesby. |

With the turn of the century and
many giving into the so called “Y2K hysteria” Nesby
charged back on to the music scene with her first career #1
single, “Lovin’ Is Really My Game,” a classic
cover of Brainstorm’s 1977 Dance hit. Peaking again shortly
thereafter at #2 on Billboard’s Dance Charts with “Love
Is What We Need,” Nesby proved that her involuntary hiatus
had not tarnished her sterling vocals and ability to deliver
the hits. Those in charge of Nesby’s project at the new
label (INTERSCOPE) lacked the creative vision to further push
for a release of Nesby’s new material and saw no future
in Nesby’s sophomore effort, LOVE IS WHAT WE NEED. Disappointed
but far from dismay Nesby along with her manager Timothy W.
Lee launched their own independent musical venture aptly titled,
IT’S TIME CHILD RECORDS in the summer of 2001; regrouping
her thoughts and career options Nesby worked diligently revamping
her sophomore album while fervently shopping for a distribution
deal to release her sophomore set.
Weathering the test of trails and tribulations with her unwavering
reliance in God, the support of family & close friends Nesby
prayers and patience paid off when UNIVERSAL RECORDS picked
up Nesby's sophomore project which was renamed PUT IT ON PAPER
for the spring of 2002. The lead single "Put It On Paper"
featured legendary soul/gospel singer Reverend Al Green was
released to Urban A/C radio where it shot to number #1 and stormed
atop Billboard’s R&B Charts for multiple weeks, again
proving that Nesby had not lost her Midas touch despite her
lengthy & involuntary hiatus from the music scene. Ironically
despite her success of her hit single, "Put It On Paper,"
Universal Records decided to no longer support the efforts of
making PUT IT ON PAPER a greater success; Nesby and Universal
Records amicably parted ways in the late 2002.
Stanched in her position to not let this break her determination
for excellence, Nesby continued on a successful US tour promoting
her album PUT IT ON PAPER; which garnered a Grammy nomination
for Best Traditional Vocal Performance at the 45th annual Grammy
Awards
Ann with her loyal manager/husband (Timothy W. Lee) have dealt
with the good and bad in which life and the “industry”
has dealt them proving that there is always a rainbow after
the storm. Standing firm at the helm of her career Ann now has
100% creative control over her music and her label, IT’S
TIME CHILD RECORDS, "When one door shuts God will open
another for you, he has been so faithful to me & I owe it
all to him.” states Nesby with conviction. With the release
of Nesby’s third solo effort, “MAKE ME BETTER,”
Ann Nesby & Timothy W Lee personify true reflections of
resilience, proving that there isn’t a stumbling block
that one can not overcome, and that alone can make you declare…
